Zithromax is commonly called Z-Pack or azithromycin, and it is an antibiotic related to erythromycin. The drug is often used as a treatment for acne vulgaris and rosacea, but rarely prescribed for acne. The most common treatments include tetracycline, clindamycin topical, doxycycline, erythromycin and minocycline.

Zithromax may be prescribed to adults who suffer from mild to moderate acne. The antibiotic can also treat strep throat, tonsillitis, pneumonia, COPD, respiratory tract infections, sinus infections and pharyngitis. Other uses include treatment of certain sexually transmitted diseases and cervix or urinary tract infections. Children may be prescribed Zithromax to treat strep throat, pneumonia, tonsillitis and middle ear infections. If you are allergic to this type of antibiotic, you should talk to your doctor before taking Zithromax.

Your doctor will conduct a medical examination and verify your medical history in order to prescribe the best dosage. If you suffer from liver or kidney disease or Long QT syndrome, you can’t take Zithromax.

Taking Zithromax may cause rare side effects such as swelling of the neck, face or lips which causes trouble speaking, swallowing or breathing. Some people may even develop a violent, sometimes deadly allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Certain patients also contract serious skin diseases after taking Zithromax. You should discontinue taking the antibiotic immediately and talk to your doctor if you experience any of these side effects.

In order to treat acne vulgaris, Zithromax is generally prescribed in a pulsed dose. This means that you may have to take the drug for 3 days and then discontinue for 7 days for a total of 3 cycles. Some doctors will also prescribe the drug to be taken in small doses every second day for approximately 10 weeks. Zithromax is comparable to 100 mg of Minocin which is the currently considered the most effective antibiotic treatment for acne vulgaris.

You should take Zithromax according to the prescribed dosage instructions. The initial dose is normally 500 mg which is decreased to 250 mg daily for the following 5 days. You must repeat the treatment monthly until your doctor tells you otherwise. Another treatment option includes taking Zithromax in 2 monthly pulses, taking the initial dose on the 1st day of the month and the next on the 15th day. You need to take Zithromax 5 days before menstruating so you can reduce flare-ups. You should discuss taking Zithromax to treat your acne vulgaris with your doctor as it may be more effective than your current treatment.
